How TGL – or Tomorrow's Golf League - is Legitimizing Indoor Golf
At GolfCave, we have been huge supporters of indoor golf for years. We love everything about this form of golf and what it brings to the game. Does it completely replace outdoor golf? No – of course not, but that’s not the point. Indoor golf is an outstanding complement to the traditional game, and the two together make golf stronger than it has ever been.
With that said, we are in the indoor golf business – so it’s only natural that we love it. The rest of the golf world has gradually been getting more and more familiar with the indoor game and what it has to offer. That’s all about to change, however, as TGL is looming on the horizon, and it stands poised to revolutionize this space. Let’s take a closer look at what it all means below.
What is TGL?
TGL stands for Tomorrow's Golf League, and it is a startup golf league that is going to be contested in an indoor arena. This will be the first high-level golf competition that has strayed away from the traditional setting of an outdoor golf course, and it is backed by some of the biggest names in the game. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have worked together on this project, and the teams are going to be filled by many high-level players who have seen success on the biggest stages.
While the first TGL competitions have yet to start, there are some features that we already know to expect –
- Advanced technology. As you would expect, TGL will be using state-of-the-art technology to accurately replicate the shots that these players can hit. An immersive experience is expected with the extensive tech that will be in place and displayed for the world to see. Of course, when you visit GolfCave to play your own round of indoor golf, you’ll also be able to access outstanding golf technology through our TrackMan equipment.
- Engaging fan experience. The indoor golf format of TGL provides an opportunity for a fan experience that just isn’t possible at a traditional outdoor course that is spread out over many acres. Fans will be brought in close to the action like never before.
- No weather worries. One of the troubles that can plague a regular golf tournament is weather-related issues that make the fan experience uncomfortable or even make play downright impossible. That’s not going to be an issue with the indoor TGL format, so the show will go on even if Mother Nature has different ideas.
- Team competitions. Fans will also get to see players engage in team competitions that have them working together with other top players to fight for the top spot. This is another difference from what is seen week after week on the PGA Tour.
What This Means for Indoor Golf
As we’ve already discussed, indoor golf isn’t exactly new. GolfCave and plenty of other companies across the country have been in this business for years and many golfers already understand just how fun indoor golf can be.
But that’s a small percentage compared to how many golfers there are from coast to coast. Indoor golf hasn’t had widespread exposure until now, and the implications are sure to be significant. For starters, TGL will simply show people how much fun indoor golf is, and how it’s more than just a backup option if it’s raining outside. Sure, playing indoors is a great solution when the weather isn’t cooperating, but it’s an experience that is still worth your time even when the sun is shining.
It will also become easier for more people to understand what kind of role indoor golf could play in their recreational lives. For example, playing a round of indoor golf with a younger child could feel a lot more approachable than trying to take the same child out onto a real golf course. And, with the fun tech that is involved, indoor golf might be more exciting and appealing to that child, as well. After watching Tiger, Rory, and other big names play on TV, it’s likely that countless young golf fans will want to try out indoor golf for themselves.
One other implication could be a growth in popularity for indoor golf competitions. It’s still the case that most people head outside when they want to compete in golf, as that’s what the pros do. But if the pros are starting to compete indoors, what’s to stop amateurs from doing the same?
